Only the sound player routines are in machine code. It is split into 3 main parts: The drum programme W}r, the keyboard player, and the joystick player.›› The drum programmer is where you create drum patterns and songs. This X}part is split into two programs: the pattern editor, and the song editor. A pattern is a "map" of drum sounds. It shows which Y} drums to play, and when. A song is where you take your patterns, and play them in a specified order to create a full song.›› Z} The keyboard player allows you to play the drums by pressing keys on your keybaord, and the joystick player does the sam [}e, except you use your joysticks to play the drums.›› We'll now take a look at each of these in detail.›››DRUM PROGRAMMER \}›› Select option A on the main menu. This will load the drum programmer menu. You now have a choice of editing patterns o ]}r songs. For now, press A to go to the pattern editor.›› When loaded, there will be a long-ish pause before the menu appe ^}ars. This is where the program initializes. After this delay, a menu will appear. Now let's take a look at what each of these _} options are used for:››A. Change pattern number. BASH-A-DRUM allows you to define 10 unique patterns. Each is numbered from `}1 to 10. When loaded, pattern 1 is selected. If you wish to edit another pattern, then select this option. Then type the patt a}ern number, and press return. If the number is invalid, the system bell will ring, and you will have to type it again. If you b} decide you don't want to change it, then just press return to get back to the main menu. The number you select here, will be c} used until you enter a new one.››B. Edit pattern. This is where you edit the patterns. The pattern you edit with this option d} will depend on which pattern number has been selected with option A (or pattern 1 if you haven't changed it). After selectin e}g this option, you will see a box on the screen. This box has 30 columns on, and 8 rows (to represent the 8 drums). After a s f}hort delay, a flashing cursor will appear in the top left-hand corner. This cursor can be moved around by using the 4 cursor g}keys (In BASH-A-DRUM you don't have to hold down the Control key when using the cursor keys). With your cursor in the require h}d position, press return to put a marker (a small dot). You can erase any markers by simply positioning the cursor over it an i}d pressing return.› In BASH-A-DRUM every marker will tell the system that a drum is to be played. Which drum will depend j}on which of the 8 rows you put the marker. E.g. putting the marker on the bass drum row will mean play a bass drum, and so on k}. Only put one marker on each row, because BASH-A-DRUM can only play one drum at a time.› By putting markers on the colum l}ns (positions from left to right), you can build up a whole pattern. You can, of course, leave gaps in the pattern so that ga m}ps are left inbetween playing the drums. As an example of all this, take a look at the following. Here a * has been used to r n}epresent a marker:›› *-------› -*------› --*-----› ---*----› ----*---› -----*--› ------*-› -- o}-----*›› This would mean play the bass drum, then the snare, and so on through all 8 drums, leaving no gaps inbetween the p} playing of the drums. Or this one:›› *--**---***----***› ------------------› ------------------› ----------- q}-------› ------------------› ------------------› ------------------› ------------------›› This would mean r} play the bass drum, leave 2 gaps, play bass then bass again, leave 3 gaps, and so on. (The dashes are already there, and are s} shown here for clarity). In this way you can build up complex rhythms. At the moment the pattern width (i.e., the max. numbe t}r of drum sounds to be played in the pattern) is set at 30. But, you may not need to use all 30 spaces. Like in the examples u}above, we need less. To alter the pattern width, first press the space bar. Now you can use the left and right cursor keys to v} decrease and increase the width respectively. You can't go below 1 or above 30. When you've set it to the required amount, p w}ress return. It will now re-draw the box to the required width. You can now continue editing. When you've finished editing, p x}ress the ESC key to return to the menu. There will be a slight pause here, as new calculations are done.› There is an exa y}mple patterns file on the disk called DEMO. Load this(loading details later on) and have a listen and a look to hear how patt z}erns sound, and how they look.››C. Save patterns. This will save the patterns you have defined or edited. You can then use th {}e patterns in the song editor. After selecting this option, type a filename and press return. Don't put D: or any extender as |} these are added for you. If the file can't be saved, you are returned to the menu. If you decide not to save them, then just }} press return to get back to the menu.››D. Load pattern. This allows you to load a set of patterns for further editing. First ~} type a filename and press return. Don't put D: or any extender as these are added for you. If the file can't be loaded you w }ill be returned to the main menu. If you decide not to load, then just press return to get back to the main menu. After editi €}ng you may save them back to disk using option C.››E. Wipe pattern. This will wipe the pattern currently selected (this will }be 1 if you haven't changed it using option A). All the other patterns will remain in-tact. It will leave the width as it was ‚}.››F. Wipe all patterns. This will clear ALL the patterns, and re-set all widths to 30. This will take a while to do before g ƒ}oing back to the menu.››G. Play pattern. This will play the pattern currently selected.››H. Exit to menu. This will return yo „}u to the drum programmer menu. Press Y to quit at the prompt, or another to return to the menu.››››SONG EDITOR›› Selectin …}g B on the drum programmer menu will take you to the song editor. A song uses a set of patterns, and plays them according to †}your requirements.› After a small delay, the song editor menu will appear. This is what each option does:››A. Edit song. ‡}Here you will actually create or edit a song. You will see a box, which contains the numbers 1 to 20, and a lot of zeroes. Th ˆ}e numbers 1 to 20 don't really mean anything. They're just there to help you. The next row is the pattern number. This is wha ‰}t pattern number is to play. The next column is repeats. This shows how many times you want this pattern repeated before movi Š}ng on to the next song entry. To change the pattern and repeat numbers, you simply use the cursor keys. Here's how:›› The ‹} [ ] around a number means that's the one you are changing at the moment. To edit the next song entry press cursor down. Kee Œ}p doing this until you get to the one you want. After entry 20, the cursor will go back to entry 1. When you get where you wa }nt, use the < key to decrease the value, and > to increase it. To move over to change the repeats number, press the cursor ri Ž}ght key. Now the [ ] will move over to this row. Use the same keys as before to alter it. To go back to editing the pattern }number, press the cursor left key. Cursor down will move the [ ] down to the next song entry. The pattern number won't go ab }ove 10, and won't go below zero(see below), and the repeats number won't go above 99 or below 1. A zero in the pattern number ‘} column tells the system that you are at the end of your song (this is in case you don't use all 20 entries in your song). He ’}re is an example song:›› 1 1 5› 2 2 3› 3 3 4› 4 7 1› 5 0 0›› This means “} play pattern 1 five times, then pattern 2 three times, then pattern 3 four times, then pattern 7 once. The zero in entry 5 s ”}hows we have finished our song. To leave gaps during one entry and the next, you could have a blank pattern, and play that th •}e required number of times.›› When you've finished editing your song, press the ESC key to go back to the menu.›››B. Clea –}r song. This will clear the song from memory.››C. Load patterns. This option is used to load in the patterns for use in your —}song. Type in a filename for the name of the patterns file you are using, and press return (no D: or extender). If there's an ˜} error you go back to the menu. Pressing just return will also take you back to the menu.››D. Save song. This allows you to s ™}ave your song to disk. Type a filename, and press return (no D: or extender). If there's an error you go back to the menu. Pr š}essing just return will also take you back to the menu.››E. Load song. This will allow you to load a song from disk for playi ›}ng, and/or further editing. Type the filename for the song you want to use, and press return (no D: or extender). If there's œ}an error, etc.››F. Play pattern. This will let you play one of the 10 patterns, so you can hear what it sounds like when writ }ing a song. Type the number of the pattern to hear, and press return. If the number isn't in range, the system bell will ring ž} and you'll have to type it again. Just press return if you want to go back to the menu.››G. Play song. This will play the so Ÿ}ng in memory, using the patterns in memory (don't forget that each pattern file contains all 10 patterns). After a slight pau  }se you will be asked to press return to play the song.››H. Alter speed. Using this option you can have more control over what ¡} happens. After selecting this option, you will be asked for a 3 numbers. The first is the drum length from 1 to 4. This is h ¢}ow much of the drum sound to play. A 1 is just a short jab, whereas 4 is a full bash. Type the number and press return (set a £}s 3 for default). The next number is for the drum gap. This allows you to leave a gap between one drum and the next (even if ¤}there isn't one in the pattern). Type a number from 0 to 100, and press return. Zero is no gap, and 100 is a really long gap ¥}(set at 0 for default). The next number is the no-drum gap. This tells the system how big a gap you wan't it to leave when it ¦} comes accross a gap in the pattern. This is set at 20 as a default. Type a number 0 to 100 and press return. Just pressing r §}eturn for any of these 3 options will keep the number as it is. Typing a value out of range will reset the value to default.› ¨}›I. Go to menu. This will quit to the drum programmer menu. Press Y and return to quit, or return to go back to song editor m ©}enu.›› A demo song has been included on the disk, called DEMO. This is for use with the DEMO pattern.›››KEYBOARD AND JOYS ª}TICK PLAYERS›› These are going to be explained together, as they're basically the same. They both allow you to play drums «} "live". You use the keyboard or joysticks to play the drums. Select option B from the main menu for the keyboard player, or ¬}option C for the joystick player.›› Both have the same drum control set-up screen when first loaded. This allows you to t }ell the system 2 things about each individual drum: the pitch and the length. The pitch goes from 2 to 8, where 2 is a very h ®}igh-pitched drum, and 8 is a very low-pitched drum. They are all set to 5 as a default (this is the "real" drum sound). The l ¯}ength goes from 1 to 4, and tells the system how long to play the drum for. A 1 is just a short jab, weheras 4 is a long bash °}. Note: the CLAP sound will only work with lengths 1-3. Here's how we alter the values:›› When you are first at the menu, ±} you will see > < around the bass drum column. This shows you which drum you are about to change the parameters of. If you w ²}ant to alter another drum then keep pressing the down arrow key until the chevrons are round the required drum. After drum 8, ³} the chevrons will go back to drum 1. When you are at the required drum, press return. [ ] will appear around the pitch valu ´}e of that drum. Use < to decrease the value, and > to increase it. To alter the length, press the right arrow key. Then chang µ}e it in the same way. You can change the pitch again by pressing the left arrow key. When you've finished changing the values ¶} for that drum, press return. You can now move the chevrons to another drum, and change the values in the same way. Keep doin ·}g this until you've changed all you want to. Now press the START key. What happens now will depend on whether you're in the k ¸}eyboard or joystick player. ›For keyboard. Keys A to K represent the 8 drum sounds.››For joystick. Joystick 1 (port 1) will h ¹}ave drums 1 to 4, and #2 will have drums 5 to 8. Push up for drum 1 (or 5 for #2), right for drum 2 (or 6), down for drum 3 ( º}or 7) and left for drum 4 (or 8).›› In both programs, press START again to get back to the drum set-up screen. From here »}you can either change the values again, or press OPTION to quit back to the main menu.›››A FEW FINAL WORDS›› BASH-A-DRUM ¼}is not aimed at the music professional. It's timings are far from perfect, and is really just for fun.›› Writing BASH-A-D ½}RUM has been something of a challenge, and quite enjoyable (that's if you define "enjoyable" as staring blankly at the TV scr ¾}een late at night, wondering why the pattern editor won't do as it's told!!)›› All the programs are listable, so you can ¿}see how they were done. However, lots of things have been crammed into memory, so it's not advisable to fiddle around with th À}em!!›› BASH-A-DRUM uses samples created with "REPLAY" from 2-Bit Systems.›› Patterns have .PAT as an extender, and So Á}ngs use .SNG.›› I must admit that this user guide does make it all sound difficult. BASH-A-DRUM is, in fact, extremely ea Â}sy to use. Just have a fiddle with it, and you'll soon get the hang of it.›› BASH-A-DRUM has taken a long time to write, Ã}and obviously I'd like to thank a few people. Thanks to Bradley for lending me his mahcine while I got a new one, thanks to 2 Ä}-Bit Systems for "REPLAY", and thanks to Bach and Beethoven for providing much needed inspiration!›› Somebody is bound to Å} spot a silly error that I've overlooked. I always think of my programs as "under development", so if you do spot an error th Æ}en let me know. Also if you have any questions or queries about BASH-A-DRUM, then write to me:››DEAN GARRAGHTY, 62 THOMSON A Ç}VE, BALBY, DONCASTER, DN4 0NU.›› If you want a reply then please enclose a SAE.›› And there we have it.
